There are countless things in today’s world, idle things which we often value far too highly; money, television, holidays, fashion etc.
In my mind, these things aren’t that important, and they hinder us from appreciating something that really matters – something that we are ultimately a part of, and couldn’t exist without. Nature.
If I ruled the world, I would ensure that the entirety of the Earth’s population spent a good deal of time outside, daily. Whether it be raining, sunny or snowing, everyone on the planet should not only have the option to enjoy the magic of nature, but they should feel the desire to.
I recently discovered the magic of nature when revising for my GCSE exams. I found it far too hard and boring to revise in my room or at the kitchen table, so one afternoon, very spontaneously, I packed a bag full of books and cycled to a secluded lake nearby. I perched up against a majestic log just metres from the water, and my learning revelation began. I felt at one with my surroundings, and time stood still. The beautiful birdsong that echoed all around me was so relaxing, and it was then that I realised just what a spectacularly incredible place the earth is. A small part of me even felt slightly disappointed and sad that the human race ever had to evolve and interrupt nature in all its glory. There was no litter, no paths, no signs, no sound of distant cars and no planes…just pure nature. It was utterly incredible, and truly a life changing experience – one I will never forget.
Everyone deserves to feel what I felt on that afternoon, and that’s why I feel spending time outdoors is not only important, but paramount.
