A pint and a stroll: what could be better? Very little actually, and when you pop down to your local, you might find that the National
Trust has provided a beer mat.
Five different beer mats have been created, each showing a short National Trust walk taking between ¾ and 1½ hours to do that include various pubs on the route. The beer mats also include details of the longer complete walk which is available to download from our website (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/walks).
So far there are five different areas in Devon & Cornwall where you can pop to a local pub and pick up a beer mat but more are likely to be planned to make the most of over 30 different downloadable Trust walks in Devon & Cornwall (130 across the country).
More than 250,000 downloadable walking guides, almost one every two minutes, were downloaded from our website in the last year. The figures have more than doubled compared to 2008 as more Britons seek out walking routes for days out or during weekends away.
Sarah Baker, Visitor Services Manager in South Devon who helped organise the ‘fancy a quick one’ partnership with local pubs said: “Everyone loves a good local pub and what better way to encourage their clientele to enjoy a bit of local fresh air and exercise than to put the information right under their nose, on their beer mat!
“We hope the walks illustrated give people a taste of what is out there for them to enjoy and if they do enjoy them we hope they’ll visit our website and find more than 30 other downloadable walks in Devon & Cornwall”, she added.

Which leads me to ask the question: what is the strangest thing that has inspired you to get outdoors?
I did spend a day or two wandering around Roswell, New Mexico in search of aliens…
